Project: Design of a multisensory and interactive visit experience in 7 languages including a mobile app, an immersive gallery and audioguides

Location: Civita di Bagnoregio (Italy)

Year: 2019

Orpheo is delighted to introduce internationally the project “Civita Lives On!“, a multisensory visit experience available in seven languages, giving a voice and identity to Civita di Bagnoregio and its surroundings. Located in the Latium region, not far from Rome, this village inspired Miyazaki’s famous animated film, “Howl’s Moving Castle,” making it one of Italy’s iconic sites abroad. What makes this project unique is the real voices of Civita’s inhabitants, lending their voices to the village and its history. Thanks to their eternal memory, Civita continues to live and resist the wear of time, frequent landslides, earning the endearing nickname of the “dying village.”

The project was funded by the POR-FESR 2014-2020 Fund of the Latium Region, as part of the call for proposals “Workshop Art, Beauty, and Culture | Civita di Bagnoregio.”

The Project

“Civita Lives On!” creates a multisensory and interactive visit experience, utilizing innovative technologies to narrate the story of Civita and its residents. The journey consists of three distinct yet interconnected experiences, offering a captivating narrative supported by various technologies. The visit is to be available in seven languages (Italian, English, French, Spanish, German, Chinese, and Japanese).

1. Visit App

The “Civita Vive!” app, available for free on the App Store and Google Play, takes users on a journey through the village’s life. An interactive map guides visitors through five iconic locations in Civita. Using geolocation and image recognition, users will discover five characters on their smartphones, each sharing a story or memory related to Civita and village life. Presented by young witnesses, these narratives provide a unique perspective, reviving the village through their eyes.

2. Immersive Experience

At the Museum of Geology and Landslides, an immersive room immerses visitors in the atmosphere, stories, and landscapes of Civita. Children’s voices narrate memories and life moments experienced in the village. Visitors can use multilingual audioguides for a personalized and automated experience, activated by sensory sensors at the room’s entrance. Audio-video synchronization allows everyone to enjoy the narrative at the right moment, even if the projection has already begun.

3. Audio Guides

For visitors wanting to deepen their knowledge of Civita and the Museum of Geology and Landslides, multilingual audioguides are available inside the museum. The visit, narrated by a young geologist and her grandfather amidst exhibits and reconstructions, offers a participative experience. By the end of the tour, visitors will have a comprehensive understanding of Civita and its territory, gaining a different perspective on the landscape surrounding the small city. The storytelling makes this visit accessible to all, from the youngest to the oldest, combining entertainment and education.
